Well Pump Wiring Guide — NEC Requirements

Well pumps range from 1/2 HP to 3 HP. A typical 1 HP 240V pump draws about 8-10A. Larger 2+ HP pumps may need 30A circuits. Size breaker per motor nameplate and NEC 430.

Pro Tip

💡 For deep wells with long wire runs (100+ feet), upsize wire to compensate for voltage drop. Always install a disconnect at the pressure tank.

Why a 20A Breaker?

The well pump draws approximately 10A at 240V (2400W). A 20A breaker provides adequate protection.

Wire Sizing per NEC 310.16

For a 20A/240V circuit, 12 AWG copper is required per NEC Table 310.16 at 75°C. For runs over 75 feet, upsize to 10 AWG (long runs). Use our Wire Size Calculator and Voltage Drop Calculator.

Complete Parts List

To wire a well pump circuit: a 20A double-pole breaker, 12 AWG NM-B cable (Romex) for interior runs or THHN/THWN-2 in conduit for exposed runs, a NEMA 14-30 receptacle (or hardwired), cable clamps, and appropriate junction boxes.
